The stated reasons for the removal of a Puerto Rican bishop by Pope Francis came without formal explanation and without due process. Bishop Daniel Fernández Torres was controversial and contrarian, but nothing he did seemed to justify removing him from his diocese, and absent serious doctrinal or moral matters, doing so has grave theological consequences.
