Father Jacques Marquette, S.J., who explored and mapped the great river, dubbed it “The River of the Immaculate Conception.” The entrustment one of the largest and most important rivers in the world to the Virgin Mary was part of the Jesuits’ mission to evangelize Native Americans. [1]
