St. Nicholas: the man who became Santa Claus

We don’t know much about St. Nicholas’ youth, but tradition holds that he was still a young man when he was appointed bishop of Myra, in present-day Turkey, in the 4th century. He was known for his generosity, exhibited in the popular story of secretly paying the dowries of three girls facing a future of prostitution because they were too poor to wed. [1]
