Virtually every culture in existence has recognized the unique stake society has in affirming heterosexual unions. Yet we now have the “Respect for Marriage Act.” Its cheerleaders celebrate it as an advancement in equality, liberty, and respect. But equality and liberty for whom? Respect for what?
