In three states, bills have been introduced that would force Catholic priests to report child abuse and neglect to the authorities (which is reasonable and permissible to Catholics), even when that sin is revealed in the confessional (which is not). The example of the saints helps us see the real issue involved in whether or not to permit any loosening of the sacramental seal.
