Newman, commenting on the Arian heresy wrote, “The Catholic people were the obstinate champions of Catholic truth, and the bishops were not.” This is the “suspended Magisterium” thesis. Comments made recently by the pope and his choice of doctrine chief seem to suggest a new suspension. Let’s pray it isn’t so.
