Most photos, paintings, and icons of St. Maximilian Kolbe show him with his signature long beard. But the very last photo of him shows him clean-shaven. As the Nazis were closing in on him, he shaved in order to blend in with his fellow Franciscans and with society at large. What happened to the beard is quite a story.
