Pope Francis is set to visit the Mongolian capital on Friday: the Church’s World Day of Prayer for Creation, established in 2015 after Francis published his environmental encyclical Laudato si’. Ulaanbaatar’s pollution there comes from settlements encircling the city, where the poor burn black market raw coal, tires, plastic bottles, and other waste to warm their homes in winter.
