Violence in Haiti displaces over 40,000 people

Gangs control approximately 80 percent of Port-au-Prince, acting as key players in the drug trade originating from various Andean countries and destined for places like the United States. “Haiti’s military is on its last legs, and barely 5,000 police officers are tasked with addressing the instability and violence tied to these networks,” Jean-Marie Théodat, a Haitian geographer and author, says. Meanwhile, over 600,000 firearms circulate throughout the country, leaving Haitians to fend for themselves as political and judicial authorities remain virtually nonexistent.
