Paradiso Registration

The Catholic Thing’s 9-week online course on Dante’s Paradiso with Robert Royal

Dante’s Paradiso is the culmination and conclusion of his great poem The Divine Comedy. It tells of how after passing through Inferno and then climbing the mountain of Purgatorio, Dante and his Lady, Beatrice, ascend through the various planetary spheres, transcend the furthest boundary of the universe, and reach heaven and the Beatific Vision.

September 14, 2021, will be the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death. On September 8, Birthday of the Blessed Virgin, we will  begin a nine-week online course on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM EST. (Each session will be made available to students not able to attend the Wednesday classes for up to 1 week afterward.) We’ll see how Dante’s vision has to expand to be capable of all that he experiences. He’ll meet famous figure such as St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Bonaventure, Solomon, Sts. Peter, James, and John, and will be guided to the ultimate reality, God, by St. Bernard of Clairvaux. Along the way, we’ll learn many things about Dante’s view of philosophy, the moral life, history, politics, and the soul’s mystical ascent.

The course includes:

– 9 video sessions, each session covers three, sometimes four, Cantos of Paradiso
– An optional copy of “Dante Alighieri: Divine Comedy, Divine Spirituality” by Robert Royal (available at time of registration)
– Optional extra reading material related to the course

We highly recommend you purchase a copy of either Anthony Esolen or Robert and Jean Hollander’s translation of Dante’s Paradiso or some other edition with good notes (not included with registration) so you can better follow along and read the Cantos before each session.

Dante is a whole universe. He’s a writer you’ll want to read and reread, wholly or in part, and Paradiso must count as one of the greatest poems ever produced. This course will take you slowly through a text that takes no little help in understanding. Please enroll as soon as possible to guarantee your place in what will be an unforgettable experience.
