To listen to many Catholic leaders (popes included), you might assume the use of capital punishment is in opposition to Church teaching. It’s not. Indeed, were Pope Francis to pronounce it as intrinsically immoral, he would thereby join the ranks of a very small number of popes who have taught doctrinal error.
