Before Pope Francis, at the meeting of the bishops with the pope the president of the visiting bishops’ conference delivered a speech to describe the state of the region, and the pope delivered a speech in his turn which provided pastoral recommendations and priorities. But Pope Francis has chose the format of an open conversation with the whole group of bishops. All of them are allowed to ask him questions, and he responds off the cuff.
