Francis begins purge in Chile

The pope’s recent letter to the Chilean people about the nation’s priest sex-abuse crisis seemed like a dropped slipper, but yesterday the Holy Father dropped the other shoe — this one more like a boot. Francis accepted the resignations of Bishop Juan Barros of Osorno, Bishop Gonzalo Duarte of Valparaiso, and Bishop Cristian Caro of Puerto Montt. He named a temporary leader for each diocese.
