A letter dated September 18, signed by Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith prefect Cardinal Luis Ladaria and CDF secretary Archbishop Giacomo Morandi, and accompanied by a four-page doctrinal note has criticized an appeal by German theologians for intercommunion between Catholics and Protestants. Doctrinal differences are significant and “currently rule out reciprocal participation in the Lord’s Supper and the Eucharist.”
