Pope Francis’s famous quip “Who am I to judge?” could go a long way toward explaining his initial attitude toward Theodore McCarrick. Trouble is his unwillingness to “judge” a number of sex abusers and their enablers (and his loyalty to these men) has cost him credibility in addressing the crisis.
