Pope Francis has wished closer ties with Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church. But he should proceed carefully, because it would appear Kirill not only intends to suppress non-Russian Orthodox churches in Ukraine but to extend his control even over Orthodoxy in Africa, thus usurping the patriarchate of Alexandria.
