Ideological rifts among U.S. bishops in Synod spotlight

The Synod on Synodality’s agenda includes divisive issues such as the role of women in the church and the inclusion of LGBTQs. Evidence for how elusive consensus on such matters may be is the United States’ participation: six clerics appointed by Pope Francis who support his aspiration for a more inclusive, welcoming church; and five clerics chosen by the USCCB who reflect a more traditionally Catholic outlook.
