Since Francis appointed Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández to head up the DDF, things have been stormy. Rumors of the cardinal offering Pope Francis his resignation are almost certainly overblown, but Fernández has become a lightning rod for criticism and controversy, drawing often unwelcome attention to a department that previously had a lower profile in the papacy.
