A new book by Belgian scholar Geertjan Zuijdwegt makes the case that those who dispute Newman’s claim that “I have resisted to the best of my powers the spirit of liberalism in religion,” are simply wrong. In fact, Newman “believed that liberalism entailed a misconception of just about everything: human nature, God, religion, morals, doctrine, truth.”
