Were the recent statements by Pope Francis concerning the possibility that hell may be empty a denial of Catholic teaching? To answer that, it’s helpful to look at Scripture, the work of theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar, and the views of St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI. All confirm the existence of eternal punishment, but all express optimism about God’s saving grace.
