Although the recent Vatican document promised clarity about the blessing of irregular unions, it stands on frail foundations: its biblical and traditional reference points are weak. This may be because the ordinary assembly of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith appears not to have been involved in the document’s formulation.
