Violins, violas, and cellos played in a recent performance at Milan’s famed La Scala carry with them tales of desperation and redemption. The wood used is recovered from dilapidated boats used by smugglers to bring migrants to Italy and then transformed into musical instruments by inmate craftsmen from Italy’s largest prison.
