Four years to the day since synodality was unveiled as the synod’s theme, the Vatican announced that the 2024 gathering will take place from Wednesday, Oct. 2 to Sunday, Oct. 27. Likely to be a major and controversial topic is the female diaconate, and one of many working groups is exploring that now. What happens on that issue come October, or even beforehand, remains to be seen.
