Conclaves, the sequestered meetings of the college of cardinals that elect the pope, have maintained an aura of secrecy and ritual throughout the centuries. Some conclaves have gone on for days, weeks, and even months. But lately, they’ve been quick. Perhaps holding just one ballot each day might slow things down and allow for greater deliberation.
