Pope figures in Sicilian abuse case

A clergy sexual abuse scandal is slowly gathering steam in Italy, with criminal convictions and the launch of an investigative podcast. And it tangentially involves Pope Francis. In Piazza Armerina in Sicily, Bishop Rosario Gisana is accused of covering up clerical crimes, and the pope has said of him, “This bishop is great. He was persecuted, calumnied but he’s been firm, always correct, a correct man.” But journalists have released audio of Gisana admitting to having covered up for an accused priest.
