The Scriptures describe the sun as ceasing to shine for three hours during Jesus’ crucifixion, which some scholars have attributed to some type of unusual mega-eclipse. These days, astronomers easily predict and explain eclipses, and millions of us will observe today’s solar eclipse – the last visible from the contiguous United States for the next 20 years. Catholics, like everyone else, have reasons to be enthralled by eclipses.
